This three-part session focuses on improving your players’ recognition and ability to split the opposition and advance forward. By Marisa Kresge
This three-part session works on improving players’ recognition and ability to break lines and advance forward.
Set up an area relative to the age and ability of your players.
Split players into teams of five. Each team has three players in the central area and a player at each end as targets.
Teams aim to transfer the ball from one target player to another for a point. Target players may not tackle each other.
Target players can also be used to maintain possession to create a numerical advantage (4v3).
Progress the practice by only allowing target players a maximum of two touches. It can further be progressed by giving the target players the option to dribble into the area upon receiving the ball. A central player must then recognise this and take their place.
Adaptations: the area can be made bigger if players have trouble advancing possession, or smaller for a greater challenge. A ‘magic player’ can support the team in possession if players are struggling.
