This three-part OL Reign session works on perfecting the final pass to leave defences for dead and create goal scoring opportunities. By Amy Griffin
This three-part session works on developing players’ awareness and ability to play a killer final pass in the attacking phase, leading to a goal scoring opportunity.
Set up an area relative to the age and ability of your players. Place an end zone at each end of the area and mark out a halfway line. The coach or a spare player may be needed to feed balls in. The practice requires 10 active players.
A target player stands in each end zone. Divide the remaining eight players into two teams of four. These eight players are free to move anywhere in the area.
The aim is for players to work opportunities to pass into their target player or dribble into their opponent’s end zone.
Encourage players to move the ball quickly through combination play. Players should look to be creative on the ball and create 1v1 or overload situations where possible.
If space is available, encourage players to dribble or run with the ball to draw a defender. Encourage attacking players to play on different lines to open passing opportunities.
Players can be challenged by reducing the number of touches they are allowed to take.
The difficulty of the practice can also be altered by changing the size of the playing area. Making it bigger will bring more success, making it smaller will increase the difficulty level.
To increase realism to match scenario, an additional player could be added who plays for whichever team is out-of-possession, as typically in a match, defenders will outnumber attackers.
