This practice recreates common match scenarios where defenders are initially outnumbered and must recover quickly to prevent a scoring opportunity. It develops decision-making under pressure, communication between defenders, and the ability to delay attacks until support arrives. It also highlights the importance of sprint recovery as a collective responsibility rather than an individual effort.
Create a 40x25 yard pitch with a goal at one end. Position three attackers at the halfway line and two defenders closer to the goal. A third defender starts behind the attackers, ready to recover. Balls are served from the coach near the halfway line.
Play begins with the coach passing to the attacking team, who immediately drive towards goal in a 3v2 situation. As soon as the ball is played, the recovering defender sprints back to support, creating a 3v3. The initial defenders must delay the attack and protect central areas until support arrives. If defenders win the ball, they can counter into a target area or mini goal.
