A fun game for youngsters to develop their awareness and movement on and off the ball.
This fun, winter-themed game promotes running and dribbling with the ball, shielding the ball, scanning for space and defenders as well as ball mastery. It also supports developing ABCs (agility, balance, coordination and speed).
Mark out an area relative to the age, ability and number of your players. The majority of players need a ball each, while two or three carry a bib in their hands.
Blue players (‘snowmen’) each dribble their ball (‘snowball’) around the area. The chasers each carry a bib and aim to ‘splat’ as many snowballs as they can, by throwing their bib at the balls. If a snowman’s ball gets hit, the chaser must shout “snowball splat!” and the snowman must freeze and complete a ball-mastery challenge, such as 10 toe-taps, to continue the game. Chasers aim to have all snowmen frozen at the same time to win.
You can start the game with no balls, so chasers aim to hit the snowmen with the bibs to freeze them. Snowmen must then complete 10 star jumps, or another challenge, to continue. To make the game more difficult, more advanced players can be the chasers and must dribble a ball while trying to splat the snowballs.
Encourage players to:
Keep their heads up while moving around the area, checking around them for space and chasers.
Use different parts of their feet to move and shield the ball.
Take small touches when in traffic and bigger touches to run quickly into space.
1. All players, except the two or three chasers start in the area with a ball
2. Chasers carry a bib each and aim to throw it against a player’s ball to ’freeze’ them
3. If a player is ’frozen’, they can unfreeze themselves by completing a technical task, e.g. 10 toe-taps
4. To make it more challenging for chasers, they can dribble a ball as well
