This three-part session focuses on improving your players’ recognition and ability to split the opposition and advance forward. By Marisa Kresge
This three-part session works on improving players’ recognition and ability to break lines and advance forward.
Set up an area relative to the age and ability of your players. Split players into three teams of five, and two goalkeepers. Target players stand either side of each goal, with one as a sub or magic player.
Play a normal small-sided game, with teams able to use target players to create a numerical advantage. Players can only pass to the target players when in the final third. Target players must play off two-touches.
The area can be made bigger if players are struggling to advance possession, or smaller if they require a greater challenge. A ‘magic player’ can be added to support the team in possession if players are struggling. Target players can be restricted to one touch for a greater challenge for both themselves and players moving off the ball.
