This three-part OL Reign session works on perfecting the final pass to leave defences for dead and create goal scoring opportunities. By Amy Griffin
This three-part session works on developing players’ awareness and ability to play a killer final pass in the attacking phase, leading to a goal scoring opportunity.
Set up an area relative to the age and ability of your players. Place two mini-goals at one end and a full-size goal at the other. Mark out a half-way line.
Place two gates approximately 25 yards in front of the full-size goal, depending on the dimensions of your pitch (we are working on the basis of 45x36 yards).
Divide players into two equal teams. The focus group should be attacking the full-size goal.
Teams get a point for scoring, but the focus group can gain an extra point by passing through a gate for a team-mate to receive in the 25-yard area.
Players should focus on the timing of their run to receive in the end zone as well as the timing of their final pass.
Encourage players to create width when their team is in-possession. Work on the rule of opposites – angled run and straight pass, or angled pass and straight run.
Players should also look to develop counter movements, so one player checks in towards the ball player and another makes a run in behind.
Progress the game to remove all restrictions (no gates etc).
