You’re the story teller as players morph into kangaroos, cheetahs, snakes, sloths and lions in this fun foundation phase activity. By Vicky Fisher
This foundation phase activity is linked to going on a safari - tell a story as you go and the players can join in too! It’s a fun way to explore the ABCs – agility, balance, coordination and speed.
Set-up an area relative to the number of players. Cones are spread out, with each set of cones associated with an animal and action.
Try to use different coloured cones to represent each different animal to make it clear. Start with just one or two animals, before adding more as players progress.
Players start without a ball. A ball can be introduced when players have had the opportunity to develop fundamental movement skills and understand the actions.
Players move or dribble around the area, and when they reach a set of cones, complete the associated animal action.
1 cone = Kangaroo; 2 cones = Cheetah; 3 cones = Snake; 4 cones = Sloth; Coach calls out = Lion.
Without ball: Run into square and then balance without moving too much – as still as possible!
With ball: Dribble into box – stopping ball with feet then balance. COACH CALLS OUT ‘LION’
Without ball: Quickly hide on the floor.
With ball: Stop ball using feet and hide behind.
Give players ownership by asking them to create new animals and challenges, or challenge them to only use their non-dominant foot. The session can be delivered over multiple weeks to create a story.
1. One cone represents a kangaroo - players can jump over the cone with or without a ball
2. Two cones form a gate for players to sprint through, with or without a ball, like a cheetah
3. Three cones can be placed in a straight line for players to ‘snake’ through, with or without a ball, in whichever direction they choose
4. Four cones create a square for players to balance in, with or without a ball, like a sloth
