Using Euro 2025 to inspire and educate your players

Women’s Soccer Coaching Editor Hannah Duncan details how you can use what’s on show at Euro 2025 to support and teach your players

This summer’s Euros presents a golden opportunity for coaches to engage their players over the close-season and use the tournament as a great way to educate players.

In the UK, every match will be broadcast live across BBC and ITV, while in the US, FOX Sports will air 31 matches.

With 16 top teams taking part, the tournament will showcase elite-level football, offering valuable lessons in tactics, teamwork – providing the opportunity for coaches to highlight their own values and principles to their players. Coaches can also use the Euros to inspire their players, deepen their understanding of the game, and enhance their technical and tactical skills.

1. Tactical analysis and learning from the best

One of the most effective ways to engage players is through match analysis. Coaches can encourage players to watch games critically, focusing on:

  • Formations and tactical setups: How do different teams approach attacking and defending?
  • Transitions: How quickly do teams switch from defence to attack?
  • Set-piece strategies: What innovative corner and free-kick routines are being used?

By analysing matches together, coaches can help players understand decision-making under pressure and apply these insights to their own game.

2. Position-specific learning

The Euros will feature some of the best players in the world, making it an ideal opportunity for position-specific learning. Coaches can task players to study those who play in their position, focusing on things like:

  • Movement off the ball
  • Defensive positioning
  • Passing accuracy and vision
  • Finishing techniques

For example, forwards can analyse how top strikers create space and time their runs, or how many touches players take before shooting, while defenders can study how elite centre-backs defend 1v1.

3. Mental toughness and resilience

International tournaments are a test of mental strength. Teams face high-pressure situations, setbacks, and moments of brilliance. Coaches can use these examples to discuss:

  • Handling pressure: How do players stay composed in crucial moments?
  • Overcoming adversity: How do teams bounce back from a goal deficit?
  • Leadership and communication: How do captains and experienced players influence their team?

By highlighting these aspects, coaches can help players develop a winning mentality and improve their ability to perform under pressure.

4. Encouraging creativity and innovation

The Euros will showcase new tactical trends and creative styles of play. Coaches can encourage players to experiment with:

  • Different attacking patterns
  • Unpredictable dribbling moves
  • Quick passing combinations
  • Adaptive defensive strategies

By fostering creativity, coaches can help players become more dynamic and unpredictable on the pitch.

5. Building team spirit and culture

Watching the tournament together can strengthen team unity. Coaches can organise:

  • Viewing sessions with discussions afterward
  • Friendly competitions where players predict match outcomes
  • Training sessions inspired by standout performances

This shared experience can boost team morale and create a deeper appreciation for the sport. It can also be a great way to integrate new players to the team.

6. Connecting to the growth of women’s football

The Euros is more than just a tournament - it represents the growth and evolution of women’s football. Coaches can use this moment to:

  • Highlight the progress of the women’s game
  • Encourage players to dream big
  • Discuss career pathways in football

By linking the tournament to the broader development of women’s football, coaches can inspire players to set ambitious goals and work toward them.

This summer’s Women’s Euros can be used as a powerful educational tool for coaches, as well as a fun way to keep players talking over the summer break. By integrating match analysis, position-specific learning, mental resilience, creativity, team bonding, and discussions on the growth of women’s football, coaches can engage their players in meaningful ways. This tournament is not just about watching great football - it’s about learning, growing, and being inspired by the best in the game.
