Five standout players at Euro 2025 and their coaching lessons

Women’s Soccer Coaching Editor Hannah Duncan talks us through five players to keep an eye on at Euro 2025, and how watching them can help you improve your coaching knowledge and educate and inspire your players

This summer’s Women’s Euros will showcase some of the best talent in world football, offering coaches a unique opportunity to analyse elite players and translate their skills into valuable lessons for their teams. Here are five standout players from their national teams’ most recent squads and the key elements of their game that coaches can use to educate and inspire their players.

1. Leah Williamson (England) – Leadership and defensive organisation

Leah Williamson, England’s captain, is a master of defensive organisation and leadership. After missing the 2023 World Cup due to injury, she has returned stronger than ever, leading Arsenal to a Champions League victory and reclaiming her role as England’s defensive anchor.

Coaching takeaways

  • Defensive positioning: Coaches can use Williamson’s ability to read the game and anticipate opposition movements to teach defenders how to stay one step ahead.
  • Leadership on the pitch: Her communication and composure under pressure make her an excellent example for young players learning to take responsibility.
  • Ball-playing centre-back: Williamson’s ability to distribute from the back highlights the importance of defenders being comfortable in possession.

2. Klara Bühl (Germany) – Dynamic wing play and creativity

Klara Bühl has established herself as one of Germany’s most exciting attacking players. Her ability to create chances, beat defenders, and deliver precise crosses makes her a key figure in Germany’s attack.

Coaching takeaways

  • Dribbling and 1v1 situations: Bühl’s ability to take on defenders teaches wingers how to use quick footwork and body feints to create space.
  • Crossing accuracy: Coaches can analyse her crossing technique to help players improve their delivery into the box.
  • Off-the-ball movement: Her intelligent positioning allows her to exploit gaps in the defence, a crucial skill for wide players.

3. Aitana Bonmatí (Spain) – Midfield control and passing range

Aitana Bonmatí, the 2023 Ballon d’Or winner, is one of the best midfielders in the world. Her ability to dictate the tempo, break lines with her passing, and control the midfield makes her an invaluable asset for Spain.

Coaching takeaways

  • Composure under pressure: Bonmatí’s ability to stay calm and make smart decisions under pressure is a key lesson for midfielders.
  • Passing range: Coaches can use her long-range passing as an example of how to switch play and exploit space.
  • Defensive awareness: Her ability to intercept and break up opposition attacks highlights the importance of reading the game.

4. Stina Blackstenius (Sweden) – Explosive speed and finishing

Stina Blackstenius has been a key figure for Sweden, known for her pace, dribbling ability, and clinical finishing. She is one of Sweden’s most dangerous attacking threats.

Coaching takeaways

  • Acceleration and agility: Blackstenius’ explosive speed teaches players how to use quick bursts to beat defenders.
  • Finishing techniques: Her ability to score from different angles and situations is a great example for strikers.
  • Pressing and defensive work rate: Coaches can highlight her commitment to pressing as a model for high-energy attacking play.

5. Ewa Pajor (Poland) – Intelligent movement and clinical finishing

Ewa Pajor, Poland’s star striker and a key player for FC Barcelona, brings a lethal combination of sharp positioning, intelligent off-the-ball runs, and ruthless finishing. Despite Poland being underdogs at Euro 2025, Pajor’s presence ensures they remain a threat in every match.

Coaching takeaways

  • Off-the-ball movement: Pajor’s ability to time her runs and exploit defensive gaps is a masterclass in striker intelligence. Coaches can use her play to teach anticipation and spatial awareness.
  • Composure in front of goal: Her calmness and precision when finishing under pressure are ideal examples for developing forwards.
  • Leadership in transition: Pajor often initiates counter-attacks with smart positioning and quick decision-making, making her a model for leading the line in transitional play.

Here’s who some of our readers are looking forward to watching...

Luca Anthony Conibeer

Personally, I’m excited to see Georgia Stanway. She’s been out in Germany for the year, adapting to the new league and team and has played 27 games, with eight goals this year and four assists. She has been performing well and can be a leading player on the pitch. I believe she will be of great impact during the summer.

Lucy O’Callaghan

There are going to be so many top players on display this summer. As a goalkeeper coach, I can’t wait to see how Hannah Hampton gets on for England in her first major tournament. She’s been an absolute rock for Chelsea this season and deserves to shine on the international stage. I love how she commands her area and exudes so much confidence.

Kirk Scott

For me, I’m excited to see Aggie Beever-Jones for her movement and composure under pressure! It will be tough for her to get in ahead of Alessia Russo though. I also think Alex Greenwood is a great example for young players, for her ability to see pictures and pick out forward passes.
