If you’re starting to look ahead to the next campaign, there are our tips for keeping as many of your current squad involved as possible
With the current season quickly advancing towards its end, many coaches may already be thinking about recruitment for the next campaign.
But before you look outward, it’s worth focusing inward. The players you already have are your biggest asset - and what you do in the next few weeks can make a real difference to whether you’ll see them again next season.
There are five things you can do now to make their return more likely.
Don’t wait for formal end-of-season meetings. Use the next few training sessions to check in with players individually - a quick chat before or after training is enough. You don’t have to pressure players but a few simple questions can give you an idea of their mindset. Are you planning to be back next season? What are you enjoying? Is anything frustrating you? This gives you valuable insight and, importantly, shows players they matter.
One of the biggest reasons players drift away is not knowing what’s happening next. If you have clarity on your own future, training nights, or league plans, start sharing it now. Even partial information helps players begin to picture themselves continuing.
For some players - particularly those on the fringes - uncertainty around playing time can lead them to look elsewhere. Where appropriate, give clear, supportive feedback about where they stand and what next season could look like. It’s far better to have a constructive conversation now than lose a player without understanding why.
This is a busy time of year, and many players are juggling football with work, exams and family life. A simple “I appreciate your effort this season” goes a long way, especially in women’s football where players often give a lot for little external reward.
As the season winds down, start reinforcing the positives: highlight progress the team has made, remind players of what they’ve achieved together, and create a sense of momentum heading into next season.
For most players, a decision to stay or go won’t be based on big gestures. Clarity, honesty and connection go a long way.
Starting those small conversations now can help secure the bulk of your squad early before pre-season kicks in and if any players do want a new challenge, an early answer gives you plenty of time to plan ahead of the new season.
