A fun way to work on player ABCs: Agility, balance, coordination (and speed)
This fun game can be used as a warm-up for players of a range of ages, developing agility, balance, coordination and speed.
Mark out an area relative to the age, ability and number of your players. Mark out end zones at each end of the area. Place a range of equipment around the area, including bibs, flat markers and - if available - hoops. If not available, mark out small circles with cones. You’ll also need some footballs.
Divide players into two equal teams, each starting in opposing end zones.
Players aim to get from one end of the area to the opposite end zone without touching the floor. They can stand on equipment and the centre of the hoops/circles are also safe, but if using these players must complete a task before moving on, such as five star jumps.
Teams earn a point for every player who successfully crosses the area without touching the floor.
You can progress the game so as the team who gets everyone safely across fastest wins. If a player touches the floor they need to start again.
You can also progress so two players on each team carry a football and can throw them at opposing players below the knee. If they hit, that player needs to start again.
Encourage players to explore different ways of moving, jumping and landing.
Are there team tactics they could explore too?
1. Set up an area relative to the age, ability and number of players
2. Teams earn a point for each player that gets from one end of the area to the other without touching the floor
3. Players can stand on equipment or use the centre of the hoops, but using these means players must complete a task before they continue
