Use the profiles of the England stars to teach youngsters some basic skills from the game
This fun warm-up game introduces players to the England Lionesses they may have seen play on television or live in person. It’s also a great way to motivate players to try new skills, test their listening and memory skills, and introduce some basic ballwork.
Mark out an area relative to the age and ability of your players. Place a mini goal on each side of the playing area, and a few lines of cones within the area. Each player needs a ball.
Players should dribble around the area with a ball each. When an England Lioness’s name is called, players should perform the skill linked to that player. Introduce new players and skills one by one, so that your players are not overwhelmed.
Mary Earps: Throw your ball in the air and jump to catch it.
Leah Williamson: Use the outside and inside of your foot to move the ball.
Lucy Bronze: Move the ball through the cones as quickly as you can.
Ellen White: Score a goal and create your own celebration.
Keira Walsh: Be creative and change direction with the ball.
Fran Kirby: Keepy uppys – how many times can you kick the ball before it lands on the floor?
Coaches don’t have to use England Lionesses as examples - any players can be used, depending on which are relatable to your team.
Encourage players to take small touches, using different parts of their feet, while dribbling around the area. Remind them to keep their heads up so they can see where other players are.
1. Set up the area with some lines of cones and a mini goal on each side
2. Each player dribbles around the area, waiting for the coach to call the name of an England player
3. Each England player is linked to a skill or move, which the players must complete upon hearing the name, e.g. Lucy Bronze - move the ball through the cones as quickly as you can
