Six tips to support you to get things back on track when they fall flat at training
As coaches, we’ve all been there. You’ve planned the session, the players are on the pitch… and yet the energy just isn’t there. It feels flat. Touches are off, players are quiet and everything feels half a yard off the pace.
It can sometimes be hard not to take it personally. A flat session doesn’t mean bad coaching or unmotivated players - but it’s still important to catch it quickly. Here’s how to recognise it early and turn things around in the moment.
Players usually know when a session feels flat, pretending otherwise rarely helps. A quick, calm acknowledgement can reset the room: “Standards have dipped, let’s fix it together.” This shows awareness, creates honesty and avoids frustration bubbling under the surface.
If a practice isn’t landing, don’t force it. A small tweak can make a big difference. Take a step back for 30 seconds and highlight why a session may not be working. Is the area too big or too small? Are there too many players not directly involved? Have the players not understood the ‘why’? And then find a way to fix it:
Changing the picture often sharpens focus without needing a full redesign.
Flat sessions often lack consequence. Introduce something that matters and get the competitiveness flowing:
When energy drops, adding detail can overwhelm players. Instead, strip things back to basics and demand higher tempo. Simplicity plus speed often re-engages players far quicker than more information:
If all else fails, go to what players love most: the game. A quick small-sided competition with minimal stoppages can revive a session instantly. Once intensity returns, you can reattach learning or progress back to your session’s theme.
Good coaching isn’t about sticking rigidly to the session plan - it’s about responding to what’s in front of you and being adaptable. Players aren’t robots. If they are mentally or physically drained – possibly due to a long day at school or tough week at work - adjust expectations. Sometimes the win is connection, clarity and enjoyment rather than ticking every objective.
