A three-part session which encourages players to create space to receive when under pressure from a defender. Session structure: Warm-up, Practice, Small-sided game
This three-part session develops players’ 1v1 skills and confidence, encouraging them to create space to receive the ball under pressure from a defender. The nature of the session allows players to experience pressure from behind, to the side and from the front.
Mark out an area relative to the age, ability and number of your players. Several players, with a ball each, start around the outside of the area, while players inside it are paired up. In the pairs, one player starts as the attacker and one as the defender.
The attackers in the middle of the area move around to find an outside player to receive the ball from and bounce it back, either one or two-touch.
The defenders aim to remain within touching distance of their partner, but are not permitted to tackle.
Swap roles after one minute and ensure outside players get a turn in the middle.
Half of the outside players no longer need a ball. Attackers must now receive a pass, turn and find a spare outside player to pass to.
Mark out several areas relative to the age, ability and number of your players. Each area will have four players – one at each end and two (an attacker and a defender) in the middle.
The attacker in the middle of the area aims to receive from one end player and transfer the ball to the other end player for a point. They can bounce back to the passer to keep possession, but don’t gain a point for doing so.
If the defender wins the ball and successfully plays to an outside player, they become the attacker.
Play one-minute rounds, after which the inside and outside players switch roles.
Attackers can no longer bounce back to an outside player, so they must find a way to stay on the ball and beat the defender to transfer the ball to the other end.
Mark out an area relative to the age, ability and number of your players. Divide the pitch into wide channels and central thirds. Split players into two equal teams and allocate positions.
Players are locked into their area and can only move areas if they dribble into one. Players can only tackle their direct opponent. All other normal match rules apply.
Players are no longer locked into zones but can still only tackle their direct opponent.
